AFC Ajax maintained their push for the Eredivisie title, and a place in the UEFA Champions League next season, with a 1-1 draw at PSV Eindhoven on Sunday.
A crowd of 31,000 at the Philips stadium witnessed a hard-fought encounter with both goals coming in an eventful first half. Czech Republic midfield player Tomáš Galásek gave Ajax the lead with a clinical finish from the edge of the area after 23 minutes. PSV defender André Ooijer equalised eleven minutes later to secure a share of the spoils.
Feyenoord made the most of the drawn match of the day with an emphatic 5-0 derby win over Sparta Rotterdam. Frank Rijkaard's Sparta team now look certainties for the relegation play-offs after a heavy defeat to their closest rivals.
Goals from Brett Emerton after five minutes, Jon Dahl Tomasson in the 13th and Pierre van Hooijonk in first-half injury time made the points safe at the break. Leonardo netted four minutes after the restart, and Paul Bosvelt hit the fifth to complete the scoring.
A 2-0 win for Roda JC at FC Groningen and a goalless draw for De Graafschap at home to seventh-placed FC Utrecht left Sparta six points from Eredivisie safety. The goalless stalemate leaves Utrecht trailing European hopefuls NAC Breda by six points and the home team still in the bottom three.
RKC keep hopes alive
Sunday's other game saw RKC Waalwijk keep their faint hopes of a European place alive with an eventful 3-1 win over FC Twente. Twente's Kurt van der Paar opened the scoring after five minutes, but Yuri Cornelisse levelled 20 minutes later.
Despite the dismissal of Zelijko Petrovic, goals by Patrik van Dieman 15 minutes from time, and Jochen Jansson in the 83rd minute won the day. However, there was still time for Twente's Patrick Pothuizen to receive a red card for his second bookable offence.
