PSV Eindhoven coach Phillip Cocu has stepped aside temporarily after successful surgery to remove a tumour from his back.
The 43-year-old had the operation on Thursday, following the discovery of what is thought to be a benign growth after he complained of back problems. Cocu will spent a few more days in hospital but while he concentrates on convalescing, assistant coach Ernest Faber has taken charge of the PSV team.
"Obviously we wish him a fast and good recovery," said PSV technical director Marcel Brands. "We have to assume that he will not act as coach for the rest of this season, although obviously we hope so. Knowing Phillip, he will do all he can to be back as soon as possible. We certainly expect him back for pre-season preparations."
Faber, assuming control of a side second in the Eredivisie after a run of eight straight wins, added: "We will continue on Phillip's path. We all have the motivation to go on for Phillip." Former Netherlands, PSV and FC Barcelona midfielder Cocu has been in the job since last summer.
