The Irish Football Association have developed a new health booklet and Facebook App to educate clubs and players on healthy eating, sports nutrition and mental health awareness.

The Irish Football Association (IFA) have developed a new health booklet and Facebook App to accompany the health programme seminars aimed at clubs throughout Northern Ireland and educate them on healthy eating, sports nutrition and mental health awareness.

Irish FA Head of Marketing and Communications, Geoff Wilson said: "The health booklet and app support the Irish FA's new innovative health programme and will be released to all clubs at all levels; from junior levels of our game right the way through to intermediate and senior football.

"The booklet and app are one-of-a-kind educational resources that will help increase the knowledge of healthy eating, nutrition and mental health in our clubs. The programme shows the innovative approach the association is taking on the importance of health. The Irish FA have been working hard with the public health agency and the University of Ulster in creating important factual content for our booklet and Facebook app and aim to exchange our knowledge with our clubs and players."

Sports minister Carál Ní Chuilín added: "Our health is our wealth and if we take care of ourselves through exercising regularly and healthy eating we are better equipped to help others. Combining social media with sport is a superb way of getting across these important public health messages."

Mary Black, assistant director for health and social wellbeing improvement at the public health agency, said: "This innovative programme of seminars, supported by a Facebook app and booklet, focus on a range of important issues in health and social wellbeing.

"The resources enable people involved in football of all ages and levels to find out more about looking after themselves and others, whether it's to do with healthier eating, dealing with the issue of alcohol and drugs, or looking after our mental health and wellbeing. This is a fantastic opportunity and through supporting the IFA in this work, we hope to connect with footballers and fans alike to increase awareness of important health issues."

The project has been made possible due to the generous support of the Northern Ireland Executive through the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure's 'Promoting Equality, Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion through Sport' programme.
