Zawisza Bydgoszcz lift first Polish Cup

Zawisza Bydgoszcz beat Zagłębie Lubin on 6-5 penalties to win their maiden major trophy on their Polish Cup final debut and earn a first ever European campaign.

Zawisza Bydgoszcz beat Zagłębie Lubin on penalties to win their maiden major trophy on their Polish Cup final debut.

Taking on a side that lost the 2005 and 2006 finals but are in relegation trouble, Bydgoszcz neglected nothing in their preparations, choosing to stay, appropriately, at Zawisza Square in Warsaw. "I hope this is a good sign," said club owner Radosław Osuch, and so it proved in front of 37,000 fans at the National Stadium, with Bydgoszcz's victory earning the club a continental debut in next season's UEFA Europa League second qualifying round.

The match was full of good opportunities, but nobody was able to score during the 120 minutes. Zagłębie had Arkadiusz Piech, the five-goal Polish Cup top scorer this season, and had not conceded in the competition, a record they maintained in Warsaw. However, Zawisza goalkeeper Wojciech Kaczmarek proved to be the hero in the shoot-out, saving from Djordje Čotra and Sebastian Bonecki before Igor Lewczuk converted in sudden death for a 6-5 win.

"I wanted to take a penalty," Lewczuk said. "I felt good, although before the game we did not practice them. Our coach, Ryszard Tarasiewicz, was a great player so he knows which players to choose for penalties."
