Season review: Romania

The Romanian title race looked to be going down to the last game as CFR 1907 Cluj trailed 2-0 at FC Universitatea Cluj, but they recovered in style to earn a third crown in dramatic fashion.

CFR 1907 Cluj wrapped up their third Romanian title in five seasons after finishing a point clear of second-placed FC Vaslui, while FC Dinamo Bucureşti ended a five-year trophy drought by lifting the Romanian Cup at the expense of neighbours FC Rapid Bucureşti.

Champions: FC CFR 1907 Cluj
Top by matchday two, it wasn't until mid-March that FC Dinamo București reliquinshed their lead following a 1-0 defeat against CS Concordia Chiajna. Despite taking up the reins, CFR seldom thrilled and coach Jorge Costa paid the price following a 5-0 loss to Rapid. Ioan Andone returned to the club in his place and despite a shaky start, the Romanian orchestrated six thrilling victories and paved the way for a third league title.

Cup final: FC Dinamo București 1-0 FC Rapid București
Defender Adrian Scarlatache headed the only goal as Dinamo got the better of neighbours Rapid. It was Dinamo's 13th cup success and saw them move up to second in the all-time rankings alongside Rapid. FC Steaua Bucureşti top the table with 21 cup successes. This was Dinamo's first major title since they won the 2007 league crown, with their last Romanian Cup triumph having come in 2005. Since then, they had played in only one final, losing 2-1 to Steaua in 2011.

Player of the year: Wesley (FC Vaslui)
The 31-year-old Brazilian ended his fourth season at the club as the league's top goalscorer. Wesley contributed 27 goals, which accounted for just under half of Vaslui's overall total as they secured a commendable second-placed finish.

One to watch: Gheorghe Grozav (FC Universitatea Cluj)
A shrewd loan signing from R. Standard de Liège, the 21-year-old blossomed in his debut season in the Romanian top flight. As well as scoring six goals, Grozav represented himself as an exciting talent, demonstrating poise and intelligence with the ball at his feet.

Surprise package: CS Concordia Chiajna
Immersed in humble beginnings, the Romanian minnows recovered from a poor start to stake their claim in the top flight. Second-bottom in December, with eleven points from 19 games, Concordia staged a spirited comeback to finish ninth after winning eleven of their last 16 matches.

Leading scorer: Wesley Lopes Da Silva, FC Vaslui (27)

Relegated: FCM Târgu Mureș, CSU Voința Sibiu, FC Sportul Studențesc, CS Mioveni.

Promoted: FC Viitorul Constanța, CSMS Iași, ACF Gloria 1922 Bistrița, CS Gaz Metan Mediaş.

Number: 84
Between 1922 and 1928, FC Chinezul Timișoara and Colțea Brașov were the two teams from outside Bucharest who dominated Romanian football. Eighty-four years later and five successive titles have been won by teams from cities other than Bucharest.

Quote
"I did not have time to change too many things here. That's why I have to praise the work done by Jorge Costa. This team has been created by him and his role is very important concerning this achievement."
CFR coach Ioan Andone, after his side were crowned champions.
