FC Dinamo Bucuresti have won their 17th Romanian league title with a round of matches to spare thanks to an emphatic 5-1 win at home to FC Apulum Unirea today.
Claudiu Niculescu and Ionel Danciulescu both scored twice for the new champions, with the other goal coming from Vlad Munteanu. Andrei Mitrofan's strike was all Apulum could muster.
First league title
The result, together with second-placed FC Steaua Bucuresti's 1-1 draw at FC Universitatea Craiova, gave Dinamo an unassailable six-point lead at the head of the standings. The title triumph also marks a first league championship for Dinamo's 44-year-old coach Ioan Andone, whose only previous silverware in an eleven-year coaching career was Dinamo's 2003 Romanian Cup victory.
Champions League challenge
Dinamo therefore enter next season's UEFA Champions League in the first qualifying round. Steaua, together with CF Otelul Galati – who face Dinamo next Sunday in their first-ever Romanian Cup final - will represent Romania in the UEFA Cup qualifying round.
At the other end of the table, only FC Oradea have been relegated to date, with FC Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt and FC Petrolul Ploiesti currently occupying the two remaining berths. The three promoted sides have already been decided, with CF Sportul Studentesc, Politehnica Iasi and CFR Ecomax Cluj returning to the top flight after absences of one, nine and 28 years respectively.
