
One of the great figures of Romanian football, Mircea Angelescu, has died aged 71.
Important leader
Mircea Angelescu was one of the Romanian game's most important leaders and played a key role in the development of football in his country. He was president of the Romanian Football Federation for two spells between 1969 and 1975, and 1986 and 1989, and was later appointed honorary president. He was also the Romanian minister for sport in 1990 and the first president of the Romanian Professional League, a position he held from 1992 to 1996. Angelescu was twice awarded civil honours for his service to Romanian football.
