Parshivlyuk earning plaudits at Spartak

Full-back Sergei Parshivlyuk's forays down FC Spartak Moskva's right are betraying his origins as a winger and leading coach Valeri Karpin to tip him for a place in the Russia team.

Name: Sergei Parshivlyuk
Club: FC Spartak Moskva
Debut: 21 July 2007 v FC Zenit St Petersburg
Position: Defender
Nationality: Russian
Date of birth: 18/03/89

I would never join another Russian club

Although only 21, Parshivlyuk has been with Spartak for more than a decade, having joined the club's youth academy aged seven. Initially a winger, he later dropped into defence because of his low goals return. He progressed through the Spartak ranks to the reserves and, in summer 2007, made his senior debut against that season's eventual champions, Zenit. The then 18-year-old came off the bench after 51 minutes and helped Spartak earn a 3-1 victory.

From making only two league appearances in 2007, Parshivlyuk established himself as Spartak's main right-back the following year because of injuries to Roman Shishkin, Martin Jiránek and Radoslav Kováč, and his reward was a first call-up to the Russia Under-21 squad. It was the start of a succession of milestones.

He scored his first goal against FC Khimki in October 2009 with a curling strike from distance, and helped Spartak finish runners-up in the Russian Premier-Liga, a campaign he ended with the Russian journalists' vote as one of the league's best three right-backs.

Awarded the captain's armband for a UEFA Champions League encounter with Chelsea FC last October, he produced a superb display which earned him his first inclusion in the senior international set-up. He soon picked up a knee injury against FC Sibir Novosibirsk and was ruled out for six months, but it did not stop the Russian Football Union naming him as the revelation of the 2010 season.

Breakthrough game
FC Spartak Moskva 2-0 FC Olympique de Marseille
21/02/08, UEFA Cup round of 32
After a 3-0 defeat in the first leg of the round of 32 tie in France, Spartak came close to turning the tables with 2-0 home victory on a night Parshivlyuk proved one of their best performers. It was just his second match in the starting XI but proved a turning point in the youngster's career – he became a first-team regular thereafter.

He says:
"I played in midfield for a long time so I had problems switching to defence. People laughed at me, saying, 'Everyone moves forward, trying to play an offside trap, but you stay ten metres behind'. At the beginning it wasn't easy at all."
On adapting to defence

"I feel [Spartak head coach] Valeri Karpin's support, as during his playing days he had the same position as me on the pitch. All the time he tells me, 'Be more angry!'."
On Valeri Karpin's influence

"I would never join another Russian club, as for me there's only Spartak Moskva in our country."
On his commitment to Spartak

They say:
"I think Parshivlyuk is capable of playing in the Russian national team."
Valeri Karpin, Spartak coach

"We have Aleksandr Anyukov as a right-back but I am happy with Parshivlyuk's progress."
Dick Advocaat, Russia coach

"He's making swift progress. Not only in one or two games, but over a long period, both in the Russian league and on the European stage. He has good qualities for cutting inside the area, creating chances and scoring goals."
Sergei Shavlo, former Spartak general director
