Celtic lift Scottish Cup to seal domestic double

Gary Hooper's first-half double set Celtic FC on their way to Scottish Cup glory as they defeated Hibernian FC 3-0 at Hampden Park to a record 36th triumph in the competition.

Celtic FC have secured a league and cup double after a pair of first-half goals from Gary Hooper set them on the way to a 3-0 win against Hibernian FC in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park.

After claiming the league title by 16 points – 28 ahead of seventh-placed Hibs – Neil Lennon's men went into the showpiece as clear favourites. They were nonetheless grateful to goalkeeper Fraser Forster for keeping them level in the opening moments as he made a reaction stop from Eoin Doyle's close-range header.

Pat Fenlon's challengers last lifted the trophy in 1902, but their hopes of ending that mammoth wait began to fade on eight minutes as English forward Hooper snuck a volley in from a tight angle at the back post to put the Hoops ahead. Anthony Stokes then drilled just wide, before sending in a perfect cross for Hooper, allowing his strike partner to double the advantage with a guided header.

Hibs pushed in the second half, but Celtic's solid back line kept Forster's workload to a minimum. The two-goal cushion never appeared truly under threat, and the game was well and truly put to bed ten minutes before the full-time whistle when Joe Ledley powered home a left-footed shot from just inside the area to ensure Celtic lifted the trophy for a record 36th occasion.

"You never tire of days like this," commented Lennon afterwards. "To win the double as a manager and as a player is pretty special. It's going to be hard to emulate that next season.

"I feel great now; I felt awful all day. I was really nervous, the stomach churning, butterflies, all that sort of thing. Just the weight of expectancy and history really, and I knew how much it meant to Hibs to win the cup today. I really wanted to get over the line with this one. That's four trophies in three years."
