Basel complete Swiss title defence

After missing a chance to do so at the weekend, FC Basel 1893 set the seal on their 17th Swiss title with a 3-1 win at FC Aarau, captain Marco Streller admitting: "I have a great feeling of relief."

FC Basel 1893 have won a record fifth successive Swiss title, a 3-1 victory at FC Aarau bringing the race to an end with a round to spare.

There was a glimmer of hope for second-ranked Grasshopper Club after Igor Nganga gave Aarau a sixth-minute lead, but Murat Yakin's side were firmly in control by the interval as Serey Die and Matías Delgado struck. The seal was firmly set on the club's 17th national title when Valentin Stocker scored a third in the second half, with Basel now four points clear of Grasshoppers going into their final game of the season, at home against FC Lausanne on Sunday.

"This is a special title, unbelievable," said Stocker. "We've won the league five times in a row – that's a great compliment to the team and the fans." Goalkeeper Yann Sommer conceded: "We had some rough patches this season, but we held it together and kept on going. We were quite nervous today too, but necessarily so." Captain Marco Streller admitted: "I have a great feeling of relief."

The fifth title in a row was a national first, with BSC Young Boys having set the mark with four successive crowns from 1957 to 1960. However, it was not the club's first record this season; they went an unprecedented 28 league games unbeaten between their only two defeats of the campaign, 2-1 against FC Zürich on 11 August and 3-1 against Young Boys on 11 May – a loss which put the title champagne on ice until today.
