NK Maribor beat second-placed NK Olimpija Ljubljana 2-1 to seal back-to-back Slovene First League titles and an 11th in the club's history with four games to spare.
A Goran Cvijanović header gave the hosts the lead on 33 minutes, but Anej Lovrečič’s volley denied Maribor a half-time lead. Inspired by the prospect of clinching the title, Maribor came out firing after the break – although they had to wait until the 73rd minute for their winner, Robert Berić sending the home fans into raptures.
Coach Darko Milanič has now guided Maribor to four titles and his side will look to make it a domestic double on 29 May when they take on NK Celje in the Slovenian Cup final. "I'm sure that we really deserved the title, but if anyone thinks that winning the championship title was easy, they are wrong," he said. "We worked hard throughout the whole season to achieve this and we always believed in our abilities. Now we just have to continue this way; Europe is knocking on our door again."
