Göteborg celebrate Swedish Cup success

"We're incredibly happy,"enthused coach Mikael Stahre after his IFK Göteborg side defeated Djurgårdens IF on penalties to claim their first Swedish Cup in five years.

It may have been a season of firsts at Sweden's new national stadium, but there was nothing unfamiliar about the first ever Swedish Cup winners at the Friends Arena as IFK Göteborg defeated Djurgårdens IF on penalties.

Pontus Farnerud's spot kick at the end of a 1-1 draw ended a five-year trophy drought for IFK and meant a first title as coach of the club for Mikael Stahre. Having last lifted the cup in 2008, the Gothenburg side have now won the competition six times.

IFK wasted little time in showing their ambition as Sweden striker Tobias Hysén put them ahead after five minutes, sliding the ball in following good work from Robin Söder. In an evenly contested encounter, Djurgården struck an equaliser early in the second half when a corner was headed in by Daniel Amartey, and they nearly snatched a winner within the 90 minutes when Erton Fejzullahu tested goalkeeper John Alvbåge.

Extra time followed, and IFK hit the woodwork twice, with a Philip Haglund header rebounding off the crossbar and David Moberg-Karlsson connecting with a post. In the ensuing penalty shoot-out, Djurgården missed three of their first four attempts, leaving Farnerud with the chance to snatch glory, which he duly did.

"We're incredibly happy," said Stahre after the match. "We felt during the second half that if we could only take this to extra time, then we'd have a good chance of winning it in those two periods of 15 minutes. Well, we then hit the woodwork twice."
