Malmö capture Swedish league title

Malmö FF have sealed their 17th Allsvenskan title with a game to spare after a goal in each half from Guillermo Molins earned a victory away to outgoing champions IF Elfsborg.

Malmö FF defeated reigning champions IF Elfsborg 2-0 on Monday to seal the 2013 Allsvenskan title with one game to spare.

Guillermo Molins scored a goal in each half amid pouring rain at the Borås Arena as Malmö wrapped up their 17th championship, coach Rikard Norling's first. "I'm just so happy," he said. "Winning at Elfsborg is never easy, but we've managed to keep our focus." His side will go into the final day of the season on Sunday with a five-point lead over second-placed AIK.

Defeat on Sunday for IFK Göteborg left AIK, who Norling led to runners-up in 2006, the only team that could pip Malmö; but nothing was going to stop the Himmelsblå at Elfsborg. The 4,000 who made the trek from Malmo through terrible weather were duly rewarded for their efforts by a team leaving nothing to chance as they continued the momentum that took them top of the table for the first time in the 20th round.

Fittingly, it was a local favourite who took them over the line. Molins returned in August after two years at RSC Anderlecht and Real Betis Balompié, and for the second successive match he struck twice. "I've enjoyed a scoring streak, a run of important goals," said Molins. "I'm so grateful and happy. Rikard believed in me and I believed in myself."

For Norling and his team it made up for the disappointment of last season, when his team finished three points short as they ended third. AIK, fourth in 2012, are destined to finish second this term while at the other end Syrianska FC have already been relegated. One of IF Brommapojkarna, Halmstads BK and Östers IF will join them in the second tier.
