Beşiktaş JK claimed the Turkish Cup for the ninth time in their history but it took a penalty shoot-out to decide their final against İstanbul BB SK, following a 2-2 draw after extra time in a dramatic encounter at the Kayseri Kadir Has stadium.
Despite going behind to Ricardo Quaresma's 33rd-minute strike, İstanbul BB rallied after the interval as İbrahim Akın levelled from the penalty spot (53) and substitute Gökhan Ünal made it 2-1 midway through the second half. Twelve minutes before the end of normal time Czech defender Tomáš Sivok brought Beşiktaş back into the match as he headed in Manuel Fernandes's free-kick.
With neither defence breached in extra time, spot-kicks decided the contest. Although Roberto Hilbert dragged his penalty wide for the Black Eagles, İstanbul duo Cihan Haspolatlı and Metin Depe both contrived to hit the crossbar, leaving Portuguese midfielder Simão with the opportunity to win the match, which he duly took.
"I have already lifted the Turkish Cup both as a player and as assistant coach, but now I have had the excitement of winning it as a coach," said Beşiktaş trainer Tayfur Havutçu. "It's a totally different feeling. I said before the game that it was going to be hard, but being in Europe was indispensible for us. I am delighted that we have guaranteed a UEFA Europa League place next season. It was a great atmosphere in the stadium and we must thank our fans for creating it."
