Gaziantepspor goalkeeper Žydrūnas Karčemarskas has won Lithuania's Player of the Year award for the second year running, with FC Šiauliai striker Artūras Rimkevičius named as top player in the domestic league.
Karčemarskas, 29, finished ahead of Heart of Midlothian FC defender Marius Žaliūkas and FC Alania Vladikavkaz midfielder Deividas Šemberas – who took the accolade in 2005 – in a poll of fans and experts. "Like last season, it was a nice surprise," said the Lithuania No1. "It was not an exceptional year for me, but thankfully I had no major injuries and this helped me play regularly at club level and in all the official national team games."
Fourth in the overall poll, Rimkevičius was selected as the best A Lyga player, having broken a record that had stood since 1956 with 35 league goals this season. FK Ekranas goalkeeper Emilijus Zubas was honoured as top young talent, while his club boss Valdas Urbonas was once again named Lithuania's top coach after his side lifted a second successive title. Rasa Imanalijeva of Gintra-Universitetas succeeded her sister Oksana as the nation's leading women's player.
