Güneş and Sağlam step down in Turkey

Defeats at the weekend spelled the end for two coaches in the Turkish Super League, as Şenol Güneş at Trabzonspor AŞ and Ertuğrul Sağlam at Bursaspor stepped down.

Defeats at the weekend have led to two coaching casualties in the Turkish Super League, with Şenol Güneş at Trabzonspor AŞ and Ertuğrul Sağlam at Bursaspor both stepping down.

A 3-1 loss at lowly Elazığspor made it five games without a win in the league for Trabzonspor, leaving the Black Sea club 11th in the 18-team division. "I believe a change of blood will be useful and the correct thing is my departure," said former national team manager Güneş, as he ended his fourth stint in charge of the club.

Meanwhile, at Bursaspor, a 4-1 defeat at İstanbul BB SK led Sağlam to call time on his spell in charge, which began in January 2009 and included leading the club to their only league title the following season. Runners-up in last season's Turkish Cup, the team has managed just one victory in their last six games, and sit sixth in the table.

"I had an unforgettable experience with Bursaspor," announced the 43-year-old. "We heard the UEFA Champions League anthem in our stadium. I always feared not losing matches but losing the love of the Bursa people.

"I am sure that nobody would say Sağlam and his team, did not represent us well. I take responsibility for the bad results. Even after winning the title I said that, in order to continue this success, the whole city must unite. However, in the last two years this did not happen."
