Alex scored twice as Fenerbahçe SK got their domestic campaign off to a positive start by beating Istanbul rivals Beşiktaş JK 2-0 at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium on Sunday to win the Turkish Super Cup.
The Super Cup had been held in Germany for the past three seasons, but its return to Istanbul gave local fans the chance to see Fenerbahçe avenge May's Turkish Cup final defeat by double-winners Beşiktaş as new Fenerbahçe coach Christoph Daum enjoyed a winning return to Turkey against his former side. Alex opened the scoring from the penalty spot on 75 minutes after Tomáš Sivok had handled in the area then headed home Daniel Güiza's right-wing cross in added time to make sure of victory.
"In the first 25 to 30 minutes Beşiktaş pushed us very hard and we were not able to breath," said Daum, who started his second stint at the Fenerbahçe helm last month. "As defending champions they had a lot of confidence and it was only in the second half that we managed to get into the game. The smallest mistake can decide a game like that. After going ahead we composed ourselves, took control and got the second goal. It's very enjoyable to have a success like this early on. Such victories are very important for a team."
Alex had also scored in Fenerbahçe's 5-1 first-leg defeat of Budapest Honvéd FC in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round last Thursday. Fenerbahçe host Honvéd in the second leg this Thursday before kicking off their Süper Lig campaign against Denizlispor on Sunday. Beşiktaş, who begin their European campaign in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, start the defence of their Turkish title at İstanbul BB on Sunday.
