Last season's Premier League runners-up Manchester City FC suffered a surprise 3-2 loss to newly promoted Cardiff City AFC, on a day when Tottenham Hotspur FC made it two wins from two games.
Manuel Pellegrini's City kicked off with an impressive 4-0 opening success against Newcastle United FC but were brought back down to earth by Cardiff, despite taking the lead when Edin Džeko drove in on 52 minutes. The Bluebirds fought back and, eight minutes later, Aron Gunnarsson pounced to slam into the net after Joe Hart had initially saved from Fraizer Campbell.
Campbell was then on hand to bundle in a corner at the back post with 11 minutes remaining before heading in his second to secure Cardiff their first points of the season, although Álvaro Negredo's added-time second for City made for a tense finale.
Both Spurs and Swansea City AFC scored five in their UEFA Europa League play-off first legs on Thursday, but it was André Villas-Boas' men who came out on top when the duo met in north London.
Tottenham made the breakthrough close to the hour mark after Andros Townsend was brought down in the area by Jonjo Shelvey. Spurs did not win a penalty throughout the 2012/13 season, but Roberto Soldado put away the club's second in two league games to leave Swansea pointless.
