At the age of 32, former Denmark captain Christian Poulsen has decided to call time on his international career.
Poulsen, who is currently without a club following the expiration of his contract with French Ligue 1 outfit Évian Thonon Gaillard FC, represented the Danes 92 times after his debut against the Netherlands in November 2001.
"I am happy and proud with my career in the national team," said Poulsen in an official statement. "I was only 22 when I appeared at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and I can look back on many exciting matches and four major tournaments with the national team.
"My decision is not due to a lack of ambition after ten years in the national team. However, younger players have appeared who are in front of me, and thus my importance to the national team is no longer the same."
Poulsen's last appearance for Denmark was in his country's final fixture in UEFA EURO 2012 Group B, when they were eliminated after losing 2-1 to Germany in Lviv, Ukraine. At club level he lists FC København, FC Schalke 04, Sevilla FC, Juventus and Liverpool FC among his former sides.
