Spain round-up: Alavés go top

Deportivo Alavés went top of the Primera División in Spain for the first time in 77 years on Saturday night after beating FC Barcelona 2-0.

Deportivo Alavés went top of the Primera División in Spain for the first time in 77 years on Saturday night after beating FC Barcelona 2-0. Carlos Llorens' 23rd-minute penalty put Alavés on their way to a famous win. Ibon Begoña settled the game just past the hour with his side's second to send his side a point clear at the top. Barcelona are now sixth.

Madrid on the up
Elsewhere, Real Madrid CF moved to within a point of second-placed RC Deportivo La Coruña with a 2-1 win against Club Atlético Osasuna. Fernando Morientes and Raúl González put Madrid into a 2-0 lead in the first 16 minutes at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, but Osasuna made the hosts work hard for their victory. John Aloisi gave Osasuna hope with a goal after 85 minutes and Madrid had to defend diligently to stave off a late fightback from the visitors.

Decisive goal
Madrid received an additional reward for their victory by gaining three points on RC Deportivo La Coruña as the former league leaders lost 1-0 to RCD Espanyol at the Olímpico de Barcelona stadium. Raúl Tamudo scored the decisive goal four minutes into the second half.

Valencia held
The night's other game saw Valencia CF held 1-1 at home against RCD Mallorca. Albert Luque gave the visitors the lead on 13 minutes however Mista levelled on 80 minutes.
