Grasshopper-Club held on to edge out league leaders FC Basel 5-4 in a thrilling match in the Nationalliga A in Switzerland on Sunday.

Yakin opener
Papabouba Diop and Ricardo Cabanas scored in the opening quarter of an hour to put Grasshoppers ahead, in reply to Hakan Yakin's seventh-minute strike for Basel.

Lead extended
Nunez Pereyra extended the visitors' lead in the 38th minute but Christian Gimenez hit back a minute later. Pereyra and Cabanas both netted their second goals after the break to put Grasshoppers 5-2 ahead.

Basel comeback
Gimenez and Carlos Vila Varela gave Basel - currently five points ahead of FC St. Gallen - hope of a point, but they failed to find the equaliser in the closing stages.

UEFA Cup tie
Grasshoppers travel to Leeds United AFC this week to take on David O'Leary's team in the second leg of their UEFA Cup third round, trailing 2-1 from the first match in Switzerland.
