Liverpool FC's stuttering season took a turn for the worse on Sunday when they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Premiership strugglers Portsmouth FC in a fifth-round replay at Fratton Park.
Michael Owen missed a penalty for the UEFA Cup hopefuls, who face PFC Levski Sofia at Anfield on Thursday, before Richard Hughes drilled in the game's only goal at the other end to book Portsmouth a place in the last eight at home against holders Arsenal FC.
Emile Heskey squandered the best chance of a tight first half when goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, celebrating his 35th birthday, made a fine stop from close range. Milan Baroš came off the bench at half-time for his first appearance since a lengthy injury lay-off and won the penalty for the visitors after going down under Matthew Taylor's challenge. But Owen side-footed the spot-kick straight at Hislop and Portsmouth took advantage with Hughes rifling in what proved to be the winner on 72 minutes.
