Fenerbahçe fly into top spot

Fenerbahçe SK defeated Istanbul rivals Galatasaray SK 2-1 to seize top spot from defeated Besiktas JK.

A dominant Fenerbahçe SK went top of the Turkish Superleague after beating arch-rivals Galatasaray SK 2-1 in Sunday’s much-anticipated Istanbul derby at the Sükrü Saraçoglu stadium. Christoph Daum's side outplayed their opponents for much of a competitive game and have now taken the initiative in the title race.

Yozgatli strikes
Fenerbahçe's prolific Brazilian striker, Marcio Nobre, scored the opener after 18 minutes but ten minutes later Galatasaray levelled through defender Ömer Erdogan's header. Former Galatasaray forward Mehmet Yozgatli then scored the winner five minutes from time after latching on to substitute Serhiy Rebrov's pass. Galatasaray were not helped by the dismissal of midfield player Volkan Arslan.

Bolic double
Besiktas JK, top of the table at the beginning of the day, lost three more important points in their 2-1 defeat by Istanbulspor AS. Ümit Aydin's penalty put Besiktas ahead before Bosnian forward Elvir Bolic scored twice to help Istanbulspor move out of relegation trouble.

Bakadal winner
UEFA Cup heroes Gençlerbirligi suffered a shock 4-1 defeat at the hands of Konyaspor after coach Ersun Yanal decided to rest some of his star players and Diyarbakirspor enjoyed their 14th game unbeaten with a 1-0 win over Akçaabat Sebatspor. Claude Bakadal scored the winner in the 72nd minute.

Relegation worries
Adanaspor AS's relegation worries deepened after their 3-2 defeat to Gaziantepspor, with Mehmet Polat scoring the winner just before half-time, while Trabzonspor cruised to a 3-1 away victory against ten-man Samsunspor with goals from Maxim Romaschenko, Fatih Tekke and Gökdeniz Karadeniz.

Thrilling encounter
In a thrilling encounter, Çaykur Rizespor defeated Elazigspor 5-4, with the latter rallying from 5-1 down to ensure an exciting finish. Finally, MKE Ankaragücü were held to a goalless draw by Malatyaspor and Denizlispor returned home happy after a 1-0 win against Bursaspor.
