Terim takes leave of Galatasaray

Fatih Terim has resigned as coach of Galatasaray SK, but will stay on until a replacement is found.

Galatasaray SK coach Fatih Terim has had his resignation accepted by club president Özhan Canaydin.

Second spell
The 50-year-old coach returned to the club for a second spell at the start of last season, having initally been in charge between 1996 and 2000, when he guided the Turkish club to four league titles and a UEFA Cup.

Disappointing results
However, his return to the club proved something of a disappointment, culminating in last week's elimination from the UEFA Cup, with Spanish side Villarreal CF running out
5-2 winners overall. Galatasaray were also knocked out of the Turkish Cup, losing 5-0 to Rizespor in January, and currently trail league leaders Fenerbahçe SK by 13 points. In addition, Terim recently dropped such famous names as Bülent Korkmaz, Hakan Ünsal and Arif Erdem, giving a number of young players a chance in their place, but with no discernible improvement in results.

'Eternal brotherhood'
Canaydin announced the resignation at a joint press conference with Terim, saying that the coach will remain in charge until the club's congress on 20 March. "Our brotherhood will be eternal," said Canaydin of his relationship with Terim.
