Manchester City FC secured their first Premier League win of the season in some style, with a 3-0 defeat of Liverpool FC further delaying Roy Hodgson's wait for a first domestic success.
With both sides having drawn their opening domestic games of the season, Gareth Barry opened the scoring for City early on with a cool, low finish from James Milner's cut-back, and while Liverpool looked to have rallied a little before the break, a Micah Richards header not long afterwards exposed the Reds' frailties, with Carlos Tévez seemingly getting the final touch. Martin Škrtel was then penalised for a foul on Adam Johnson, inviting Tévez to belt home the third goal of the night from the spot on 67 minutes. "It was a fantastic night for Manchester City," said manager Roberto Mancini.
While the Reds struggled in the rain, their UEFA Europa League play-off opponents Trabzonspor AŞ enjoyed a fine victory in Turkey, beating Fenerbahçe SK 3-2 at home. A Mehmet Topuz own goal and an Ibrahima Yattara strike put the Black Sea side 2-0 up early on, and while Diego Lugano responded, Arkadiusz Głowacki struck to make it 3-1. Mehmet Topuz scored at the right end for Fenerbahçe before the break, and though Gustavo Colman missed a second-half penalty for the hosts, it was to have no bearing on the eventual outcome.
