Depor delight at Madrid scalp

RC Deportivo La Coruña prepared for FC Porto's visit in the UEFA Champions League by beating Real Madrid CF.

A weakened RC Deportivo La Coruña side dealt a severe blow to Real Madrid CF's Primera División chances when they beat the champions 2-0 at the Riazor on Saturday.

Scorching free-kick
A precise shot from striker Diego Tristán and a scorching free-kick from defender Joan Capdevila secured Depor a morale-boosting victory ahead of their UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against FC Porto on Tuesday. Madrid's misery was compounded by the sending-off of Zinedine Zidane just before the break after he picked up a second booking for a foul on Brazilian midfield player Djalminha.

Valencia on top
With just three games to play Madrid remain in second place, a point behind the leaders Valencia CF who have a game in hand and play Real Betis Balompié on Sunday. Madrid's city rivals Club Atlético de Madrid enjoyed a more prosperous evening, renewing their bid for a place in next season's UEFA Cup with a breathless 3-2 victory at home to relegation-threatened RC Celta de Vigo.

UEFA Cup chase
The result leaves Atlético three points clear of CA Osasuna, who can reclaim sixth spot if they beat Real Racing Club Santander on Sunday. Celta remain in deep trouble in 19th place, a point behind RCD Espanyol and Real Valladolid CF who have yet to play this weekend.
