Sliema celebrate as rivals slip

Sliema Wanderers FC claimed their 25th Maltese league title after rivals Birkirkara FC could only draw.

Sliema Wanderers FC claimed their 25th Maltese Premier League title after rivals Birkirkara FC could only draw 1-1 against Pietà Hotspurs FC on Sunday.

Unassailable advantage
Sliema were crowned champions for the second successive season without playing - having a four-point lead over Birkirkara who have only one game to play against Sliema's two.

All square
Alain Ekwe put Pietà ahead after 19 minutes with a delicate chip, but Lucian Dronca's 70th-minute penalty levelled matters after Anatole Debono had fouled Antoine Zahra.

Target reached for Aquilina
"We have reached our target once again," Sliema coach Edward Aquilina told uefa.com. "The secret of our success at Sliema? Well, harmony. We have a great bunch of players and administrators all united at one great club."

Relegation showdown
At the other end of the table, Msida St. Joseph FC beat Valletta FC 3-1 to set up a showdown in the final fixture of the season with fellow relegation contenders Balzan Youths FC. The match next Sunday will decide who will be relegated alongside Hamrun Spartans FC.
