Fernando Llorente struck twice as Athletic Club earned a 2-1 first-leg lead against CD Mirandés in the Copa Del Rey semi-final, while Olympique Lyonnais scraped into the French League Cup final.
Mirandés's hopes of becoming the first side from the Spanish third tier to reach the Copa del Rey final suffered a setback against Athletic. Carlos Pouso's men have generated immense interest in Spain after ousting top-flight sides Villarreal CF, Real Racing Club and RCD Espanyol en route to the last four but the Rojinegros were up against it early on when Llorente put Athletic Club 1-0 in front after 18 minutes, heading in Óscar de Marcos's left-wing cross.
The 23-time winners found the net again just nine minutes later when Llorente fired low past goalkeeper Nauzet for his fifth goal in two games. Spurred on by a capacity home crowd, Mirandés twice came close to equalising with Haritz Mújika clipping the crossbar from distance and César Cáneda's flying volley spectacularly saved by Gorka Iraizoz. The hosts would not be denied a goal, however, with Ander Lambarri firing in with seconds left.
Lyon reached the French League Cup for the first time since 2007, meanwhile, but had to come back from a two-goal deficit with just 11 minutes remaining before overcoming FC Lorient 4-2 after extra time. Les Merlus surged ahead through Innocent Emeghara (59) and Kévin Monnet-Paquet (68) only for Alexandre Lacazette to pull a goal back for the visitors and Jimmy Briand to equalise three minutes into added time. Bafétimbi Gomis then edged Lyon ahead (108) before Lacazette struck again in the dying seconds.
Rémi Garde's side face either holders Olympique de Marseille or OGC Nice, who meet on Wednesday, in the Stade de France final on 14 April.
