Barcelona and Juventus make cup progress

FC Barcelona will play Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey final after squeezing past Valencia CF while Juventus overcame AC Milan at San Siro in the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg.

FC Barcelona squeezed past Valencia CF to set up a Copa del Rey showpiece against Athletic Club while Juventus overcame AC Milan to take a slender advantage into the second leg.

With the scores level at 1-1 from the first leg, Barcelona required just 16 minutes to forge ahead courtesy of Cesc Fàbregas. Valencia were reduced to ten men when Sofiane Feghouli received his marching orders shortly before the end but there was still time for Xavi Hernández to wrap up a 3-1 aggregate win. Josep Guardiola's side will face Athletic in the final after the Bilbao outfit ended CD Mirandés's remarkable cup run last night.

All the goals came in the second half as Juventus beat Milan 2-1 at San Siro to take a narrow lead into the second leg. Martin Cáceres (53, 83) scored either side of Stephan El Shaarawy's strike (62) as the Bianconeri go in search of a tenth Coppa Italia crown and a first since 1995.

There was a surprise result in Germany as TSG 1899 Hoffenheim succumbed 1-0 at home to second-tier SpVgg Greuther Fürth. FC Bayern München reached the semi-finals with a 2-0 victory against VfB Stuttgart thanks to goals from Franck Ribéry (30) and Mario Gomez (46), while VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach required extra time to beat Hertha BSC Berlin by the same scoreline.

Elsewhere, Olympique Lyonnais needed extra time to see off fellow Ligue 1 side FC Girondins de Bordeaux and book their place in the Coupe de France quarter-finals. Valenciennes FC edged out LOSC Lille Métropole to seal their progress while Montpellier Hérault SC won 2-0 at LB Châteauroux. Finally, Stéphane Sessegnon's extra-time winner ensured Sunderland AFC got the better of rivals Middlesbrough FC 2-1 and set up an FA Cup fifth round tie against Arsenal FC.
