Van Basten returns to Eredivisie with Heerenveen

"This is a beautiful, sporting and healthy club," said former Netherlands coach Marco van Basten upon agreeing to take over sc Heerenveen on a two-year deal in the summer.

Former Netherlands coach Marco van Basten has agreed to take over at sc Heerenveen on a two-year deal in the summer.

The 47-year-old is to succeed coach Ron Jans, who has confirmed he will be leaving in the summer after two years in charge, despite guiding his side to third place in the Dutch top flight. "I am happy to be here and delighted to have signed the contract," said the former AFC Ajax, AC Milan and Netherlands striker. "The negotiations went very well and the club showed a lot of faith in me. I think this is a beautiful, sporting and healthy club."

After a glittering playing career that included two European Champion Clubs' Cups with Milan and UEFA European Championship success with the Oranje in 1988, Van Basten returned to football as head coach of the Netherlands in 2004. He guided the national team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2008. A season in charge of Ajax ensued but this will be his first coaching assignment since he left the Amsterdam outfit in May 2009.
