Rangers FC took advantage of Celtic FC's day off with a 3-0 win at Motherwell FC that left Alex McLeish's side ten points behind the Scottish Premier League leaders.
Rangers march home
Russell Latapy, Tore André Flo and Fernando Ricksen were all on target for Rangers and were it not for a superb performance from goalkeeper Stevie Woods at Fir Park, the margin of victory could have been even more dramatic.
Latapy opened the scoring after 14 minutes and Flo added a second with 41 minutes gone before Motherwell's slim chances of fighting back were ended by the dismissal of defender Eric Deloumeaux just after the hour. Woods kept Rangers at bay for most of the remainder of the game but could do little about Ricksen's fierce 20-metre strike five minutes from time.
Aberdeen trounce United
Aberdeen FC shocked Dundee United FC with two goals in the opening ten minutes and another at the start of the second half to open up the race for third place in the Scottish Premier League. The Dons added a fourth late in the game through new signing Leon Mike and are now just three points behind third-placed Livingston FC.
Struggling Saint Johnstone FC dented Livingston's European hopes with a 3-0 win in Perth while a late Derek Townsley goal earned Hibernian FC a 1-1 draw at home against Dunfermline Athletic FC, but the day's most dramatic game was at Rugby Park where Kilmarnock FC and Heart of Midlothian FC shared the spoils in a 3-3 draw.
