Szarmach and Karembeu hail EURO trophy tour

The Follow the Trophy tour reached its fourth stop on Thursday and UEFA.com has been with it from the start, when Andrzej Szarmach and Christian Karembeu told us all about it.

The UEFA EURO 2012 Follow the Trophy tour is well under way, attracting sizeable crowds as it journeys through Poland and Ukraine with the Henri Delaunay Cup and a selection of well-known names. UEFA.com spoke to two at the start line in Warsaw last week, former Poland favourite Andrzej Szarmach and, first, UEFA EURO 2000 winner Christian Karembeu.

"I think that most of [the public] have seen the trophy or the competition on TV, but now it's real, concrete," said the former French international during the tour's three-day stay on Plac Defilad in the Polish capital. "They can touch it, they can take pictures, they can enjoy the cup, this energy, this atmosphere; it belongs to them."

Many fans echoed that sentiment, a number cradling autographs from Karembeu and the indefatigable Szarmach, a UEFA EURO 2004 ambassador who says the sense of anticipation is palpable. "When I go to a football match, people ask me about EURO 2012, how the organisation and preparations are going. All is fine, because people are interested and eagerly awaiting the first whistle of this European Championship."

The tour has since moved onto Gdansk and Poznan and on Thursday it parked up at Wroclaw's Market Square for a three-day stop. In all, it will visit 14 cities across the two co-host countries of UEFA EURO 2012 before finishing on the Black Sea coast at Odesa on 26 May.
