FC Den Bosch are back in the Dutch Eredivisie after a thrilling last day of the season.
With only one side guaranteed automatic promotion from the second flight, SC Excelsior had been favourites holding a two-point lead going into the final matches. But the Rotterdam side were held 1-1 at Helmond Sport, meaning victory for Den Bosch would give them the title on goal difference.
Things looked bleak when Den Bosch trailed 2-1 at home to BV Veendam with a quarter-hour to go, but Peter Uneken and Berry Powel scored in a six-minute spell to secure a
3-2 victory and a top-flight berth two years after relegation. Excelsior now enter the play-offs along with divisional rivals Sparta Rotterdam, Heracles Almelo, Helmond, De Graafschap and VVV Venlo, with two Eredivisie places up for grabs.
FC Zwolle, SBV Vitesse and FC Volendam will be the Eredivisie bottom three, with two entering the play-offs and the third automatically relegated. Those positions will be decided after the final set of matches on Sunday.
