Devastating defeat condemns Zwolle

FC Zwolle lost their Dutch Eredivisie status with a 7-1 loss at Feyenoord as their main rivals both won.
FC Zwolle's stay in the Dutch Eredivisie is over after a devastating 7-1 defeat at Feyenoord.

Zwolle condemned
Zwolle, like SBV Vitesse and FC Volendam, knew they would finish in the bottom three, but only the lowest side would go down automatically. And although Zwolle were only third-bottom at kick-off on the final day of the regular season, their defeat coupled with victories for Vitesse and Volendam left them condemned to the Eerstedivisie.

Feyenoord delight
Feyenoord were 4-0 up inside 30 minutes as Danko Lazovic and Dirk Kuijt both struck twice. Patrick Paauwe scored the fifth just after half-time and although Dominggus Lim-Duan pulled one back, Kuijt and Lazovic each completed hat-tricks for the third-placed finishers.

Volendam relief
Volendam had begun the day bottom, but held their nerve to beat RBC Roosendaal 2-1. Jack Tuyp gave Volendam a 30th-minute lead and added a second 23 minutes into the second period. A draw would have condemned Volendam, and Marcel Cas pulled one back nine minutes from the end, but the home side held on.

Rink double
Vitesse would have survived on goal difference with a draw, but did not know that at kick-off and rallied into a 2-0 lead against FC Utrecht as Paolo Rink scored on 32 and 33 minutes. Vitesse full-back Ruud Knol was dismissed just after the break, but they secured a 3-0 win when Raymond Fafiani registered 26 minutes from time.

Play-off groups
Eerstedivisie champions FC Den Bosch will replace Zwolle, while Volendam and Vitesse will compete for the other two remaining Eredivisie places in the play-offs, which begin on Wednesday. Vitesse are in a group with Sparta Rotterdam, Helmond Sport and VVV Venlo, while Volendam will meet SC Excelsior, Heracles Almelo and De Graafschap home and away.

Ajax style
Champions AFC Ajax signed off in style with a 5-2 win at Willem II. They remain six points clear of runners-up and fellow UEFA Champions League qualifiers PSV Eindhoven, who beat AZ Alkmaar 4-2 with a hat-trick from Mateja Kezman, the league's top scorer with 31 goals.

Twente warm up
FC Twente, who meet Utrecht in next Sunday's Dutch Cup final by beating SC Heerenveen 2-0. However, Heerenveen finished fourth, and join Feyenoord, fifth-placed Alkmaar and the cup winners in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup. Elsewhere, Roda JC drew 2-2 with visitors FC Groningen, while NAC Breda saw off RKC Waalwijk 5-3 and ADO Den Haag defeated NEC Nijmegen 4-1.
