Samsunspor coach Erdogan Arica has taken over from Ersun Yanal as coach of Gençlerbirligi SK.
Arica has signed a one-year contract after his predecessor left to take charge of the Turkish national team. The Ankara side have qualified for the UEFA Cup next season as Turkish Cup runners-up, but their new coach has set his sights even higher.
"Gençlerbirligi are a side who already have their infrastructure and youth development systems in place," he said. "Our target for next season is either to be Turkish champions or claim a spot in the [UEFA] Champions League. I have been working hard as a coach for two years but at Gençlerbirligi I will redouble my efforts."
Club president Ilhan Cavcav explained his decision to hire Arica, saying: "We had worked with Arica in the past. Two years ago we parted company with him involuntarily and for that reason he has a special importance for me. When it was certain that Ersun Yanal would go, his name was the first that came to my mind. I believe next season we will be a team who will compete for the title."
Arica, whose Samsunspor side finished seventh in the league this season, three points ahead of Gençlerbirligi, will be assisted by Özhan Kiziltan, Sinan Turhan and goalkeeping coach Sinan Sayar. The new coaches will do well to emulate Gençlerbirligi's UEFA Cup achievements this year as they eliminated Blackburn Rovers FC, Sporting Clube de Portugal and Parma AC before bowing out to winners Valencia CF.
