PSV Eindhoven moved to within two points of Eredivisie leaders AFC Ajax after a 4-1 defeat of Roda JC on Saturday.
Vennegoor of Hesselink scores twice
All four PSV goals came in the first half as Eric Gerets' side warmed up in style for Thursday's UEFA Cup quarter-final first leg against Feyenoord. Mateja Kezman, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (2) and Dennis Rommedahl all found the net as PSV made it 49 points from 25 matches - three points clear of Feyenoord who play AZ Alkmaar on Sunday, when Ajax entertain De Graafschap.
It was not all good for PSV, however, as defender Kevin Hoflund was shown a straight red card on 61 minutes for a professional foul on Tom Soetaers and moments later Edrissa Sonko pulled a goal back for Roda. What is more, midfield player Johann Vogel is almost certain to miss both matches against Feyenoord with concussion after he was knocked out in a first-half collision with Roda defender Regilio Vrede.
SC Heerenveen remain fourth with a 2-0 home win against RKC Waalwijk, Stefan Selakovic and Anthony Lurling both scoring early in the second half. Lurling's goal came after Rogier Molhoek's dismissal had left RKC with ten men. Level on 45 points with Heerenveen are NAC Breda, 2-1 winners at FC Den Bosch. Mark Schenning put NAC ahead on 38 minutes and American international Ernie Stewart doubled their lead shortly after the hour. Fred van den Hoorn scored a late reply for eleventh-placed Den Bosch.
Groningen ease worries
SBV Vitesse defeated FC Twente 2-0 thanks to goals in the last quarter of an hour from Dejan Stefanovic and Gert Claessens, while FC Groningen eased their relegation worries with a 1-0 win at bottom club SC Fortuna Sittard, Jordi Hoogstrate scoring the only goal after 28 minutes.
