Bayern through, Fortuna humbled, Málaga relief

FC Bayern München made the German Cup quarter-finals, third division Offenbacher Kickers 1901 pulled off an upset and Málaga CF narrowly avoided Copa del Rey embarrassment.

Germany
FC Bayern München remain on course for a sixth domestic double in 11 seasons after a 2-0 German Cup last-16 win at FC Augsburg. Mario Gomez turned in a Franck Ribéry cross for Bayern on 26 minutes. Ribéry was then dismissed early in the second half but with five minutes left Xherdan Shaqiri settled an exciting third-round tie for Bayern, nine points clear at the top of the Bundesliga. Under new coach Jens Keller, who replaced Huub Stevens at the weekend, FC Schalke 04's hopes were ended 2-1 by visiting 1. FSV Mainz 05. Schalke fell behind to Marco Caligiuri on the half-hour, and although Klaas-Jan Huntelaar levelled with 15 minutes left, Mainz's Nicolai Müller settled the contest.

The sole surviving third-tier team pulled off an upset as Offenbacher Kickers 1901, who qualified via the Hesse regional competition, overcame Fortuna Düsseldorf 1895. Former German youth international Matthias Fetsch turned in a rebound on 76 minutes and Stefan Vogler made it safe late on for the hosts. However, third-tier Karlsruher SC fell 1-0 to Jonathan Schmid's early goal for visitors SC Freiburg. The third round concludes on Wednesday with the remaining four fixtures including holders Borussia Dortmund against Hannover 96.

Spain
Third-tier SD Eibar, who knocked out 2011/12 Copa del Rey finalists Athletic Club last week, were denied victory against UEFA Champions League contenders Málaga CF in added time of the delayed round of 16 first leg. Txema Añibarro struck for the home team on 74 minutes only for Oguchi Onyewu to level at the death for Málaga. The fifth round second leg is on Tuesday 8 January, kicking off a week when all eight return matches will be played.

Italy
FC Internazionale Milano
made it to the Coppa Italia quarter-finals with a 2-0 defeat of the last Serie B survivors Hellas Verona FC. Antonio Cassano and Fredy Guarín both netted early in the second half at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. Inter will meet the winner of tomorrow's SSC Napoli-Bologna FC tie in the quarter-finals, in which AC Milan take on Juventus. The fifth round ends on Wednesday as Udinese Calcio play ACF Fiorentina for the right to visit AS Roma, and S.S. Lazio tackle AC Siena with Calcio Catania awaiting.
