Swansea shine as Ronaldo sinks Celta

Swansea City AFC provided another League Cup semi-final first-leg shock by winning at Chelsea FC while Cristiano Ronaldo's treble inspired Real Madrid CF and Juventus also progressed.

England
There was another first-leg upset in the League Cup semi-finals as Chelsea FC were defeated 2-0 at home by Swansea City AFC, a day after fourth-tier Bradford City AFC beat Aston Villa FC 3-1. The Swans have not won a major trophy in their 100-year history and were playing in the last four of the competition for the first time, but they soaked up incessant pressure from the hosts before capitalising on two errors. Michu seized on Branislav Ivanović's slip to curl the visitors from Wales into a 39th-minute lead and Michael Laudrup's side grabbed a second at the death when Danny Graham profited from an underhit Ivanović back pass. The return leg takes place on 23 January.

Spain
Real Madrid CF kept their Copa del Rey hopes alive as Cristiano Ronaldo struck a hat-trick in a 4-0 home victory that overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit against RC Celta de Vigo in their round of 16 tie. Two goals in the opening 24 minutes from the Portuguese left the visitors reeling but José Mourinho's charges suffered a nervous finale after Sergio Ramos was sent off 18 minutes from time. Ronaldo (87) and Sami Khedira (89) settled their nerves on the counterattack and Valencia CF now await the Merengues in the last eight.

Sevilla FC completed their serene progress at home to RCD Mallorca. Manu extended the locals' advantage following their 5-0 first-leg triumph, though 17-year-old Brandon and Alejandro Alfaro at least ensured the Balearic club won the return meeting. Míchel's men will face Real Zaragoza in the quarter-finals, after Franco Zuculini (23) and Francisco Montanes (60) saw off ten-man Levante UD 2-0 on the night at La Romareda and 3-0 overall.

Italy
Juventus bounced back from their surprise Serie A reverse against UC Sampdoria on Sunday to edge AC Milan 2-1 after extra time in the Coppa Italia. Stephan El Shaarawy's low drive from the edge of the area gave the Rossoneri a sixth-minute advantage in Turin, but it took Sebastian Giovinco the same amount of time to restore parity through a sublime free-kick. It remained 1-1 until the period of overtime, when Mirko Vučinić poked in the decisive effort for the Italian champions to book a semi-final tie against S.S. Lazio.
