Gerrard receives 100-cap awards

"It's been fantastic. For me all the games have been significant," said Steven Gerrard, having received awards to mark his century of England caps on Wednesday night.

Steven Gerrard received awards from UEFA and the Football Association (FA) to honour his reaching 100 caps for England before Wednesday night's 2-1 friendly win against Brazil at Wembley.

The Liverpool FC midfielder – voted player of the year for 2012 by fans of the national team – collected commemorative caps from both his national association and European football's governing body, prior to making his 101st appearance in a Three Lions shirt.  He had achieved his century in England's 4-2 defeat by Sweden on 14 November 2012.

"It's been fantastic," said Gerrard, 32, as he reflected on his international career. "For me all the games have been significant. Every time you put the England shirt on it is a proud moment.

"If I was pushed, the most significant game for me would be the 5-1 win in Germany in 2001," he added. "That was an incredible win and it was my first goal for England too, so a special day. But playing for England is always special. I still feel fresh and I look forward to every England game as much as my debut. I'm still loving it as much as if it was my first because it's an exciting time to be an England player."
