SC Fortuna Sittard were condemned to their 18th defeat of the season after Jesper Hakansson scored twice inside 60 seconds to secure victory for SC Heerenveen on Wednesday night.
The win lifts Foppe de Haan's side to within a point of second-placed Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie but leaves Sittard stranded in last place, ten points adrift from second-from-bottom Sparta Rotterdam.
Cramb of comfort
The home side went ahead through Erik Edman's long-range strike in the seventh minute but struggling Fortuna were handed a lifeline with a Colin Cramb penalty in first-half stoppage time. Hakansson, a half-time replacement for defender Arek Radomski struck his first goal in the 68th minute after a clever back-heeled pass from Marcus Allback found him in space just inside the box.
In the 69th minute he added a second when, following some hesitant defending by Fortuna he struck home a shot from the edge of the area.
Elsewhere on Wednesday night, three goals in the last five minutes condemned De Graafschap to their third successive defeat as NEC Nijmegen won 3-1. Dennis de Nooijer got NEC back into the game after Hans van der Haar had given the visitors the lead on the half-hour before Marcel Koning and Bart Latuheru scored on the stroke of full-time. It was a bitter blow for De Graafschap, who are hovering just above the relegation zone, as they had taken the lead against the run of play and worked hard to maintain their advantage.
