League Cup joy for City, Spurs and Reims

Manchester City FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC battled through to the last eight of the English League Cup, while Stade de Reims were the star performers in the French competition.

English League Cup
Manchester City FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC booked their places in the English League Cup quarter-finals, but both had to put in that little bit extra to overcome Newcastle United FC and Hull City AFC respectively. Álvaro Negredo's close-range finish and Edin Džeko's strike secured Manchester City's progress in extra time, after the opening 90 minutes in Newcastle ended goalless.

Meanwhile, at White Hart Lane, it took a Brad Friedel save from Ahmed Elmohamady to kill off Hull 8-7 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw. Gylfi Sigurdsson's fine effort put Tottenham ahead, but the 42-year-old Friedel's own goal levelled matters and Paul McShane then put the visitors ahead in extra time, only for Harry Kane to respond for the north London side. Spurs will meet West Ham United FC, while City visit second division Leicester City FC.

French League Cup
Antoine Devaux's 35th-minute header from Atila Turan's cross was enough for Stade de Reims to eliminate AS Monaco FC from the French League Cup as the third round concluded. Hubert Fournier's hosts were already on something of a high having won 3-2 at Olympique de Marseille in Ligue 1 at the weekend. Earlier, Évian Thonon Gaillard FC were 2-1 winners at EA Guingamp, but it took overtime for FC Sochaux-Montbéliard to subdue visiting Montpellier Hérault SC 3-2.
