Manchester United beaten, Valencia strike back

Ryan Giggs's own goal contributed to Manchester United FC's League Cup semi-final first-leg loss at Sunderland AFC while Valencia CF held Club Atlético de Madrid in the Copa del Rey.

English League Cup
Premier League strugglers Sunderland AFC will take a 2-1 lead to Old Trafford for the return leg of their League Cup semi-final against Manchester United FC. Fabio Borini scored the winner from the spot on 64 minutes after Adam Johnson went down under a Tom Cleverley challenge. It is the first time United have lost three consecutive competitive games since the summer of 2001.

The home side forged ahead on the stroke of half-time when Ryan Giggs put the ball into his own net while trying to stop Phil Bardsley connecting with former United defender Wes Brown's pass, but Nemanja Vidić responded with a header from a free-kick seven minutes after the restart.

Manchester City FC host West Ham United FC in the other semi-final opener on Wednesday, with that tie concluding on 21 January, the day before United's home decider against Sunderland.

Copa del Rey
Hélder Postiga snatched a 1-1 draw for Valencia CF in the first leg of their Copa del Rey round of 16 tie, with Club Atlético de Madrid unable to hang on to their advantage at Mestalla.

The home team had the better chances until Raúl García seized his opportunity after Valencia goalkeeper Vicente Guaita failed to clear a 72nd-minute corner. Valencia redoubled their efforts after falling behind, with Thibaut Courtois saving from Sergio Canales and Sofiane Feghouli, but Postiga got his head to Feghouli's ball into the box deep into added time to level matters.

Seven more round of 16 matches will be played on Wednesday and Thursday, with the ties concluding next week.
