Cup victories for Madrid, Roma and Udinese

AS Roma returned to winning ways at UC Sampdoria's expense on a night when Udinese Calcio also progressed in the Coppa Italia and Real Madrid recorded a first-leg victory.

Coppa Italia
AS Roma bounced back from their first loss of the season by defeating UC Sampdoria 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico to book their place in the Italian Cup quarter-finals. Vassilis Torossidis settled the contest with a sixth-minute tap-in, the right-back following up for his first goal of the campaign after Vincenzo Fiorillo had kept out Mattia Destro's close-range effort. Roma, beaten 3-0 in Serie A on Sunday by Juventus, will play the Bianconeri in the last eight.

There was also a solitary goal in the other match as Udinese Calcio edged out FC Internazionale Milano. Maicosuel got it for the hosts on 32 minutes, arriving at the far post ahead of Nerazzurri captain Javier Zanetti to turn in Nicolás López's ball across the area. Udinese will meet the winners of the AC Milan-Spezia Calcio tie, which takes place next week along with three others.

Copa del Rey
Karim Benzema opened the scoring with a header as Real Madrid CF overcame CA Osasuna 2-0 at home in the first leg of their Spanish Cup round of 16 tie. The France striker rose in the box to glance in Luka Modrić's inswinging free-kick with 19 minutes gone. A misplaced back pass from the visitors led to Jesé doubling the lead on the hour, the 20-year-old finishing off a pass from Cristiano Ronaldo, who had been teed up by Benzema. The first legs between Real Sociedad de Futbol and Villarreal CF, and Rayo Vallecano de Madrid and Levante UD ended goalless.
