Copa del Rey
Club Atlético de Madrid are in pole position to progress to the Copa del Rey semi-finals after the holders secured a slender 1-0 quarter-final first-leg advantage against Athletic Club. Diego Simeone's side were in charge from the off but struggled to break through a rugged visiting back line. That was until Koke whipped a ball into the area from the right which allowed Diego Godín to thump an unstoppable header past Iago on 41 minutes. Óscar de Marcos whistled a shot past Thibaut Courtois' post after the break but Athletic, fourth in the Liga, could not get back on terms. They must win next week's return in Bilbao if they are to reach a semi-final against Real Madrid CF or RCD Espanyol.
A date with Udinese Calcio awaits ACF Fiorentina in the last four of the Coppa Italia after the Viola battled past Serie B's AC Siena to record a 2-1 quarter-final victory on home turf. Without silverware in the competition since 2001, Fiorentina were set on track for the last four by Josip Iličić in the 20th minute as the midfielder pounced on a defensive slip to drive into the box and fire low into the corner. Guillermo Giacomazzi headed Siena level with a deft finish on the hour mark but defender Marvin Compper won it for the hosts with 15 minutes to play, escaping his marker to nod in a corner.
Coupe de France
AJ Auxerre clinched a place among the last 16 as they edged past fellow Ligue 2 side Dijon FCO with a 3-2 success after extra time. Visitors Dijon clawed back a two-goal deficit to take the game beyond 90 minutes, but Lynel Kitambala scored in the 121st minute to seal progress for the 2005 French Cup winners. AS Cannes also advanced as their tie with fellow fourth-tier outfit Stade Plabennec ended 1-0 to the men from the south coast. Belkacem Zobiri decided matters for the home team in the 28th minute.
