FC Twente eased their relegation fears with a confident 2-0 victory at AZ Alkmaar.
Relief for Twente
Ellery Cairo gave the visitors a sixth-minute lead and Jeroen Heubach sealed the points today with a wonderful individual effort 19 minutes from the end. Alkmaar's miserable evening was capped when midfielder Barry van Galen was sent off in the 61st minute after picking up his second yellow card.
Roda JC also boosted their battle to beat the drop with a 3-0 win over fellow strugglers Sparta Rotterdam. The visitors stay in the relegation play-off places after an own goal from Victor Kros was added to by Iva Vicelich and Kevin van Dessel. Roda remain one place above Twente in 12th despite the win, but the three extra points could prove invaluable come the final reckoning.
NAC eye European finish
Tamas Peto boosted NAC Breda's hopes of gaining a UEFA Cup spot by hitting the winner in a 1-0 success over De Graafschap. NAC moved up to fifth in the Eredivisie thanks to Peto's 57th-minute intervention. Alfred Schreuder knocked a free-kick to Peto, who held off a challenge from Ilja van Leerdam before drilling the ball into the bottom left corner from outside the area.
NEC battle back
NEC Nijmegen stormed back from a goal down to earn a 3-1 home victory over rock-bottom SC Fortuna Sittard. Ronald Hamming gave the visitors a surprise lead in a scrappy opening half, but Frank Demouge equalised 15 minutes later. Rob Wielaert put NEC ahead with 16 minutes left before substitute Zico Tumba wrapped up the points.
