Netherlands round-up: PSV pile on the pressure

PSV Eindhoven fired a warning to AFC Ajax and Feyenoord with a 4-1 win over SC Heerenveen.

PSV Eindhoven fired a title warning to AFC Ajax and Feyenoord with a 4-1 victory over SC Heerenveen today.

Danish double
A double from Danish striker Dennis Rommedahl and a goal apiece for Kevin Hofland and Adil Ramzi helped PSV move within two points of Feyenoord in second place and four behind leaders Ajax. PSV, like Feyenoord, have a game in hand on Ajax.

Kezman class
Hofland opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 13th minute when Mateja Kezman was fouled by Arjan Ebbinge. Kezman then created the second 12 minutes later after going one-on-one with goalkeeper Hans Vonk before slipping a pass to Ramzi for an easy finish.

Two quick goals
The second half began with Rommedahl in clinical mood. The Dane combined with compatriot Kasper Bogelund in the 48th minute before running at full speed and launching a shot into the top corner from ten metres. Four minutes later, Rommedahl added a fourth, and his second, by lobbing Vonk.

Consolation strike
The final goal of the day came from the visitors at the Philips stadium. In the 76th minute another Dane, Jesper Hakansson, beat two PSV defenders before shooting past Ronald Waterreus at the near corner. It was a bitter defeat for fourth-placed Heerenveen who still have title ambitions of their own.

Den Bosch in trouble
In the day's other game, Dutch Cup finalists FC Utrecht left FC Den Bosch in the relegation mire with 3-1 victory at the Nieuw Galgenwaard stadium.

Vreven on target
Den Bosch remain just one place and one point above third-bottom De Graafschap after Utrecht sealed victory with goals by Stijn Vreven, Paulus Roiha and Arco Jochemsen. Bart van den Eede scored a penalty for Den Bosch, who had Peter Uneken sent off five minutes from time, to give them hope at 2-1 but it was to prove a false dawn.
