Fiorentina borrow Portillo

Real Madrid CF striker Javier Portillo has joined Serie A side ACF Fiorentina on loan for the 2004/05 campaign.

Impressive figures
The 22-year-old, who scored more than 700 goals in eight seasons with Madrid's youth teams, made 18 appearances last term, mostly from the bench. However, Fernando Morientes's return to the Santiago Bernabéu from AS Monaco FC has further reduced his chances of selection.

No permanent move
Fiorentina will not have the option of a permanent transfer, meaning the forward - who struck a spectacular long-range goal on his Madrid debut against Panathinaikos FC in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League - will return to the Spanish capital in June. "This is an opportunity to gain the experience that will enable me to fight for my place at Madrid next year," Portillo said.
