Baljic bolsters Galatasaray

Elvir Baljic scored the only goal as Galatasaray SK defeated Trabzonspor to move into second spot.

By Türker Tozar

Elvir Baljic scored the only goal of the game as Galatasaray SK defeated Trabzonspor at Hüseyin Avni Aker stadium to leapfrog their rivals into second, but Fenerbahçe SK remain on top after an emphatic win.

Frantic finale
Baljic gave his side a 1-0 win after good work by Hakan Sükür on 70 minutes in a cagey encounter in Trabzon. Neither goalkeeper had much to do until the deadlock was broken but the final 20 minutes became frantic as the home side sought an equaliser. Gökdeniz Karadeniz twice went close, as did Augustine Ahinful, but Trabzonspor could not find a way through and succumbed to their first defeat of the season.

Biggest win
With Fenerbahçe playing on Sunday, the win briefly saw Galatasaray move to the summit, before the champions re-took the lead in style, with a 6-0 win to relegate Sakaryaspor AS to the foot of the table. Mehmet Yozgatli, Serhat Akin, Servet Çetin and Pierre van Hooijdonk all got on the scoresheet, while Marcio Nobre scored twice as Fenerbahçe recorded the biggest Superleague win of the season.

Juanfran chip
One of Fenerbahçe’s main rivals last season, Besiktas JK, continued their recent mini-renaissance with a 4-1 victory against MKE Ankaragücü, after falling behind to Faruk Namdar's sixth minute penalty. John Carew equalised with another spot-kick eleven minutes later before goals from Mustafa Dogan, Ibrahim Akin and a sublime chip by Juanfran completed the scoring, to earn the side their first back-to-back wins of the season.

Happy return
The side they defeated last weekend, Diyarbakirspor, bounced back with a 1-0 win against BB Ankaraspor, while Çaykur Rizespor won 2-0 to deny opponents Denizlispor the chance of going fourth. That spot is still held by Malatyaspor after coach Aykut Kocaman marked his return to Istanbulspor with a 2-0 victory, thanks to goals from Atilla Birlik and Marcel M'bayo.

First win
Kayserispor capitalised on Sakaryaspor's defeat at the hands of Fenerbahçe with a 4-1 win against Akçaabat Sebatspor to lift themselves to two places from bottom. Israeli Pini Balili scored two, and Mithat Yavas and Mehmet Topuz added the others as Kayserispor recorded their first win of the season. Elsewhere, Samsunspor defeated Gençlerbirligi SK 2-0, while Zafer Biryol's 72nd-minute equaliser earned Konyaspor a 2-2 draw against Gaziantepspor.
