Greece lead Ballon d'Or nominations

Six of Greece's UEFA EURO 2004™-winning squad are on the shortlist for the European Footballer of the Year award.

Six of Greece's UEFA EURO 2004™-winning squad are among the 50 players on the shortlist for the European Footballer of the Year award.

Greek heroes
Captain Theodoros Zagorakis, named as the JVC UEFA EURO 2004™ Player of the Tournament, is among the nominees for the Ballon d'Or along with goalkeeper Antonios Nikopolidis, defenders Giourkas Seitaridis, Traianos Dellas and Mihalis Kapsis and striker Angelos Charisteas.

Nedved nominated
Juventus FC's Pavel Nedved, who won the 2003 award and reached the last four in Portugal with the Czech Republic, is also on the list, as one of 14 players from Serie A, including six from AC Milan, the highest club figure.

Zidane record
The Serie A tally of 14 is matched by Spain's Primera División, while the nation with the most nominees is from outside Europe, with seven Brazilians on the list, among them Ronaldo, who is hoping for a joint-record third Ballon d'Or. Zinedine Zidane, winner in 1998, is on the shortlist for a record ninth time, along with five other French players. The winner will be announced in December.
