Olympiakos Piraeus FC are hoping to play their UEFA Champions League games next season at the Rizoupoli stadium, the home ground of Apollon Athens FC, who are now playing in the Greek second division.
Domestic and European needs
Ever since it was announced that Olympiakos' home stadium the OAKA Spiros Louis would close during the summer, in order to undergo renovations ahead of the the 2004 Olympic Games, the Greek champions have been searching for a stadium to meet their needs domestically and in Europe.
Initially they sought approval to play in the GSP Stadium in Limassol, Cyprus, but their request was denied. Now they hope to use the Rizoupoli. However they are faced with the challenge of a massive renovation at the stadium in order to have it meet the necessary standards for the Champions League.
Work has already begun and on 18 June, Olympiakos will formally submit their request for the Rizoupoli to host their European games. Olympiakos officials then hope that the stadium will be ready by mid-August, just before the final inspection conducted on UEFA's behalf by by TEAM Marketing officials.
